What is kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can relieve pain and other symptoms of a compression fracture. This type of fracture is a common side effect of osteoporosis, a progressive condition that causes the loss of bone density.
With less density, your bones become brittle and are at increased risk for frequent or recurrent fractures due to the collapse of your spine. You may also lose height and find it difficult to stand up straight without any pain.
The goal of kyphoplasty is to stabilize the affected vertebrae in your spine and prevent a permanent spinal deformity.
What can I expect during kyphoplasty?
At Desert Pain Specialists, their team performs the kyphoplasty procedure while you’re under anesthesia to keep you relaxed and comfortable.
Using the guidance of special X-ray technology, your provider inserts a needle through the muscles of your back to access the affected vertebrae. Through the needle, they place and inflate a balloon that widens the space in the vertebrae to restore its normal height and position.
After deflating the balloon, your provider injects a medically safe cement that quickly hardens to provide stability in your spine.
Because the procedure requires no surgical incisions, you won’t need stitches and can expect to go home after a brief period of recovery. The entire procedure typically lasts an hour or less, depending on the number of fractured vertebrae.
How long does it take to heal from kyphoplasty?
In many cases, Desert Pain Specialists recommends you begin walking soon after the procedure to prevent stiffness and pain in your back. You may have some discomfort in the area where the needle went into your back, which typically resolves within a day or two.
You should notice an immediate reduction in your previous back pain, with results continuing to improve over time.
