WHAT IS PAIN MEDICINE
Pain Management is a Board Certified specialty that applies the science of medicine to the reduction of pain. It covers a wide spectrum of conditions including sciatica, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, shingles pain, post-operative pain, pain that persists after back or neck surgery, arthritis and many more.
Pain Management is a very young specialty. In fact, it has only been a Board Certified specialty since 1993. We are in our infancy of understanding the complex disease now known as pain. The goal of pain management is to minimize pain, rather than eliminate it. This is because quite often it is not possible to completely do away with it. Pain diseases like arthritis, peripheral neuropathy and even sciatica are often not curable. Unfortunately pain is a disease like high blood pressure or diabetes. And like the other diseases of modern society, we are able to control symptoms, but we do not yet have a cure. So our goal is to ease your pain and in addition, improve your daily ability to function and return the quality to your life.
Because pain is such a complex disease, it takes a multi-disciplinary approach to treating pain effectively. Dr. Anderson utilizes many specialists in the Coachella Valley to assist her expertise in the treatment of your pain. Dr. Anderson is board certified as an Anesthesiologist as well as a Pain Management Specialist. The focus of her practice is on injections to break the cycle of pain and medications to ease its severity. In addition to her medical training, she also has 30 years experience and education in exercise, wellness and nutrition so she utilizes a holistic approach to ease your suffering.
Chronic pain is not the same thing as the acute pain of a sprained ankle or broken arm. The only similarity between acute and chronic pain is that they both hurt. But that is where the similarity ends. When we are sick or injured the normal course of treatment is to go to bed and heal. Chronic pain does not respond to inactivity. Patients who suffer from chronic pain enter a pain cycle in which they decrease activity in an effort to decrease their pain condition. Long-term inactivity results in muscle weakness and depletion of oxygen to their muscles, resulting in painful muscle spasms, significant muscle weakness and a worsening of their pain. This vicious cycle of pain, inactivity and worsening pain has got to be broken. Desert Pain Specialists works to break this cycle of pain so you can get yourself on the road to recovery.
